We are the Brave New World!
I adore the way fanfiction writers engage with and critique source texts, but manipulating them and breaking their rules. Some of it is straight-up homage, but a lot of [fan fiction] is really aggressive towards the source text. One tends to think of it as written by total fanboys and fangirls as a kind of worshipful act, but a lot of times you’ll read these stories and it’ll be like ‘What if Star Trek had an openly gay character on the bridge?’ And of course the point is that they don’t, and they wouldn’t, because they don’t have the balls, or they are beholden to their advertisers, or whatever. There’s a powerful critique, almost punk-like anger, being expressed there—which I find fascinating and interesting and cool.

HAHA WOW I never thought of fanfics like this before I mean I write it to vent out my feelings on what I personally felt should have happened or I like to write alternatives or come up with a completely different pov for each character for me fanfics aren't easy for me they can be hard but in my opinion there is one thing easy about writing a fanfic is you have all the characters there and don't need to make up your own unless you want to of course,,,, but this has defo made me think of fanfic in a different light it's true about the whole advertisers thing fanfic we can change it as much as we want and add bizarre things that wouldn't be in the actually thing like dong soo and yeo un for example many people who ship them for example you ta-meaut may write kissing scenes between them or just smut but it wouldn't be in the actually show I like how fanfics you can do practically anything with it while if the things people wrote about ended up on our tv screen it would be controversial lol thanks for sharing this with us ta-meaut it really makes me think in a different light
ReplyDeleteYes, true...the characters are our puppets and we can just make them do whatever we like - however what we make them do is sometimes so outrageous in our conservative society that it acutally beecomes a social critisism. Amazing!
